Troche Storage and Handling FAQ

Answers to common questions about storing, handling, and transporting ketamine troches — including temperature requirements, shelf life, travel considerations, and what to do if troches are damaged.

Additional Storage and Handling Tips

Proper storage and handling of ketamine troches ensures that each dose delivers the intended amount of medication consistently throughout your treatment. Because troches are compounded products rather than commercially manufactured, they may be somewhat more sensitive to environmental conditions than factory-sealed medications.

Moisture Protection

Moisture is the primary environmental threat to troche integrity. Humid environments, bathrooms (where steam from showers raises humidity), and unsealed containers all expose troches to moisture that can:

  • Soften the troche base, altering dissolution characteristics
  • Activate degradation pathways in the ketamine compound
  • Promote microbial growth in preservative-free formulations

Store troches in a cool, dry location away from bathrooms, kitchens, and other high-humidity areas.

Light Protection

While ketamine is not as light-sensitive as some medications, prolonged exposure to direct sunlight or bright artificial light can contribute to degradation. Keep troches in their opaque pharmacy packaging or in a drawer, cabinet, or box away from light sources.

Inventory Tracking

Because ketamine is a Schedule III controlled substance, maintaining awareness of your inventory is both a practical and legal responsibility. Know how many troches you have on hand, keep track of usage, and arrange refills in advance to avoid gaps in therapy. Report any discrepancies — missing troches or unexpected shortages — to your provider.
